"Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.”
Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know
where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the
truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:1-6,
New International Version)
Throughout Lent this year, I’ve been writing about Jesus’ disciples. And here it is – Easter Morning! What more can I tell you about those twelve men?
Well, there was Thomas. Few remember him asking the question above. Instead, he is known for the statements below.
One of the twelve disciples, Thomas, was
not with the others when Jesus came. They told him, “We have seen the Lord!”
But he replied, “I won’t believe it unless
I see the nail wounds in his hands, put my fingers into them, and place my hand
into the wound in his side.”
Eight days later the disciples were
together again, and this time Thomas was with them. The doors were locked; but
suddenly, as before, Jesus was standing among them. “Peace be with you,” he
said. Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and look at my hands. Put
your hand into the wound in my side. Don’t be faithless any longer. Believe!”
“My Lord and my God!” Thomas
exclaimed.
Then Jesus told him, “You believe
because you have seen me. Blessed are those who believe without seeing me.” (John
20:24-29, New Living Translation)
Even though we haven’t seen Him with our own eyes or touched His wounds, we know that our Redeemer lives. We have been blessed. Praise God!
